The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination

J.K. Rowling, author of the best-selling Harry Potter book series, delivers her Commencement Address, “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,” at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association.

Text as prepared follows.

President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, proud parents, and, above all, graduates.

The first thing I would like to say is ‘thank you.’ Not only has Harvard given me an extraordinary honour, but the weeks of fear and nausea I’ve experienced at the thought of giving this commencement address have made me lose weight. A win-win situation! Now all I have to do is take deep breaths, squint at the red banners and fool myself into believing I am at the world’s best-educated Harry Potter convention.

Delivering a commencement address is a great responsibility; or so I thought until I cast my mind back to my own graduation. The commencement speaker that day was the distinguished British philosopher Baroness Mary Warnock. Reflecting on her speech has helped me enormously in writing this one, because it turns out that I can’t remember a single word she said. This liberating discovery enables me to proceed without any fear that I might inadvertently influence you to abandon promising careers in business, law or politics for the giddy delights of becoming a gay wizard.

You see? If all you remember in years to come is the ‘gay wizard’ joke, I’ve still come out ahead of Baroness Mary Warnock. Achievable goals: the first step towards personal improvement.

Actually, I have wracked my mind and heart for what I ought to say to you today. I have asked myself what I wish I had known at my own graduation, and what important lessons I have learned in the 21 years that has expired between that day and this.

I have come up with two answers. On this wonderful day when we are gathered together to celebrate your academic success, I have decided to talk to you about the benefits of failure. And as you stand on the threshold of what is sometimes called ‘real life’, I want to extol the crucial importance of imagination.

These might seem quixotic or paradoxical choices, but please bear with me.

Looking back at the 21-year-old that I was at graduation, is a slightly uncomfortable experience for the 42-year-old that she has become. Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me.

I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that could never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension.

They had hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents’ car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.

I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.

I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

What I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty, but failure.

At your age, in spite of a distinct lack of motivation at university, where I had spent far too long in the coffee bar writing stories, and far too little time at lectures, I had a knack for passing examinations, and that, for years, had been the measure of success in my life and that of my peers.

I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known hardship or heartbreak. Talent and intelligence never yet inoculated anyone against the caprice of the Fates, and I do not for a moment suppose that everyone here has enjoyed an existence of unruffled privilege and contentment.

However, the fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you are not very well-acquainted with failure. You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success. Indeed, your conception of failure might not be too far from the average person’s idea of success, so high have you already flown academically.

Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.

Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality.

So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.

You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.

Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above rubies.

The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.

Given a time machine or a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.

You might think that I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. Though I will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.

One of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded Harry Potter, though it informed much of what I subsequently wrote in those books. This revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. Though I was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, I paid the rent in my early 20s by working in the research department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London.

There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. I saw photographs of those who had disappeared without trace, sent to Amnesty by their desperate families and friends. I read the testimony of torture victims and saw pictures of their injuries. I opened handwritten, eye-witness accounts of summary trials and executions, of kidnappings and rapes.

Many of my co-workers were ex-political prisoners, people who had been displaced from their homes, or fled into exile, because they had the temerity to think independently of their government. Visitors to our office included those who had come to give information, or to try and find out what had happened to those they had been forced to leave behind.

I shall never forget the African torture victim, a young man no older than I was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. He trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted upon him. He was a foot taller than I was, and seemed as fragile as a child. I was given the job of escorting him to the Underground Station afterwards, and this man whose life had been shattered by cruelty took my hand with exquisite courtesy, and wished me future happiness.

And as long as I live I shall remember walking along an empty corridor and suddenly hearing, from behind a closed door, a scream of pain and horror such as I have never heard since. The door opened, and the researcher poked out her head and told me to run and make a hot drink for the young man sitting with her. She had just given him the news that in retaliation for his own outspokenness against his country’s regime, his mother had been seized and executed.

Every day of my working week in my early 20s I was reminded how incredibly fortunate I was, to live in a country with a democratically elected government, where legal representation and a public trial were the rights of everyone.

Every day, I saw more evidence about the evils humankind will inflict on their fellow humans, to gain or maintain power. I began to have nightmares, literal nightmares, about some of the things I saw, heard and read.

And yet I also learned more about human goodness at Amnesty International than I had ever known before.

Amnesty mobilises thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs to act on behalf of those who have. The power of human empathy, leading to collective action, saves lives, and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. My small participation in that process was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of my life.

Unlike any other creature on this planet, humans can learn and understand, without having experienced. They can think themselves into other people’s minds, imagine themselves into other people’s places.

Of course, this is a power, like my brand of fictional magic, that is morally neutral. One might use such an ability to manipulate, or control, just as much as to understand or sympathize.

And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know.

I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces can lead to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the willfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid.

What is more, those who choose not to empathize may enable real monsters. For without ever committing an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our own apathy.

One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.

That is an astonishing statement and yet proven a thousand times every day of our lives. It expresses, in part, our inescapable connection with the outside world, the fact that we touch other people’s lives simply by existing.

But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 2008, likely to touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you apart. The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest, the pressure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders. That is your privilege, and your burden.

If you choose to use your status and influence to raise your voice on behalf of those who have no voice; if you choose to identify not only with the powerful, but with the powerless; if you retain the ability to imagine yourself into the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence, but thousands and millions of people whose reality you have helped transform for the better. We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.

I am nearly finished. I have one last hope for you, which is something that I already had at 21. The friends with whom I sat on graduation day have been my friends for life. They are my children’s godparents, the people to whom I’ve been able to turn in times of trouble, friends who have been kind enough not to sue me when I’ve used their names for Death Eaters. At our graduation we were bound by enormous affection, by our shared experience of a time that could never come again, and, of course, by the knowledge that we held certain photographic evidence that would be exceptionally valuable if any of us ran for Prime Minister.

So today, I can wish you nothing better than similar friendships. And tomorrow, I hope that even if you remember not a single word of mine, you remember those of Seneca, another of those old Romans I met when I fled down the Classics corridor, in retreat from career ladders, in search of ancient wisdom:
As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.
I wish you all very good lives.
Thank you very much.

Book Blabbing

I'm at work right now but I don't feel like I'm at work at all. Since my shift started all I did was just surf the net, listen to music, IM and occasionally search for videos on the web. I just wish everyday is Saturday or Sunday at work. The workplace is just so peaceful during these days unlike the market-like environment during the weekdays. Weekdays can go pretty crazy here, like a mad house! But I just don't like to spend the entire night staring at my monitor. It's soo boring, I would like to have little challenges on the side. Like some problems that I need to attend to. But on second thought.. Nah! I'd rather be here doing nothing than cramming my butt trying to be some superhero who'll save the day from further system downtime.

Anyway for the lack of something to do, I did read some chick lits that I have downloaded before. It's no ordinary chick lits, it's Meg Cabot's the author of Princess Diaries, which the movie almost all girls happen to love. For the record I only read the (chick lits) works of Sophie Kinsella and now Meg Cabot. I have read all books of Sophie, it started with the Confessions of a Shopaholic because I was kind of curious about this book and how almost all girls talk about this for hours. And I kinda admit that I've read that book because I was kind of ... just a little I think, of a shopaholic myself. After reading the 'confessions' of Becky Bloomwood, I kinda got hooked up and I ended up reading all Sophie's books.

Tonight, I've finished reading two of Meg Cabot's books, How To Be Popular and Queen of Babble. I also started reading She Went All The Way but I ditched it, for now, thinking that my shift's about to end and I won't be able to finish it today. Maybe tonight. I had fun reading How To Be Popular, you can score a tip or two! But I just think that it was a teenybopper one. Basing on the fact that the leads were 16 year olds. I had a great time reading Queen of Blabble. I love the fashion freak Lizzie Nichols and the uber hot Jean-Luc. The plot is similar to Sophie's Can You Keep a Secret but Jean-Luc is hotter and the setting/scenery is superb. A French chateau in the countryside with the vineyard, a real windmill and the Dordogne river! Lizzie and I share the same passion which is fashion and her love for vintage clothes. Oh my! I am already morphing into a Queen of Babble! I need to stop this nonsense blabbing. I suggest you read the book so that you'll know what I'm blabbing about. :)

I am so not ashame that I've read those books. I love Paulo Coelho, Amy Tan, Sydney Sheldon, Mitch Albom and a few more but Meg and Sophie's humor is incomparable. They are both hilarious! And reading a chick lit is like my own diversion, it's like watching a funny movie after a stressful day to relax yourself and forget about anything that matters even for a while.

How about you? Have you read any chick lit? And what book was it?

Heeby Jeebies

I received more than 5 messages yesterday about the earthquake 'forecast'. When in fact nobody or nothing can predict an upcoming earthquake. It's just so annoying, because earthquakes gives me the heeby jeebies and those messages reminds me of the time back in the province when we experienced an earthquake and I was like crying and screaming like crazy. I don't know but earthquake is my biggest fear... my hydrophobia, acrophobia and claustrophobia are just ants compared to my elephant fear of earthquakes. I don't really know why I freak out when I hear about earthquakes maybe it's because of something I watched from a movie when I was little. In that movie I saw the earth cracked open and all/most of the things living or not living were eaten alive (in living things' case). And also it's because of the stories my grandma told me about the earthquake in some parts of the country particularly the HYATT hotel in Baguio thingy.

It really gives me the goosebumps just remembering what I was told that took place there. And about those people who ate tissue papers and other non-edible stuff just to survive because they were trapped down low. God knows where and when will they be able to get rescued. OK, enough of this earthquake stories, I'm only rubbing more salt to the wound... Whatever. I just need to stop this blabbing.

The only thing that made me happy about this earthquake messages spreading around is that the least person I thought who would send me a message did sent me one! Even if it was the earthquake warning it felt so good knowing that he still cares. And it was my dad. I don't know but my earthquake fear yesterday was eased up by the message that I got from him. Thanks papa.

Anyway, got to rush. I'm meeting my mom and brother at the mall. I don't care if I won't be able to sleep today. I have all night to sleep tonight coz I'm off from work! Have a happy weekend to me! :)

For Real.

Today I got the biggest surprise ever! And I was really surprised, I didn't see it coming. The day started just like any other day. I came home from work, did an hour of exercise while having my dose of morning news, then went to sleep. At past noon, my mom asked me to come with her to the bank, I was hesitant because I didn't get enough sleep yet. But I know my mom and my cousin they just won't let me be, they'll drag me if they have to. So I gave in. In return we'll have dinner at the mall.

After my mom went to the bank, we went around the mall for a while. Suddenly, my phone rang and it was my brother calling! I answered the phone, then my brother was asking if we were at home. I told him that we're at the mall because we went to BDO which happens to be inside the mall, then we'll buy some groceries and have dinner there. He was like "you should come home now, I'm on the cab from the airport. I won't be able to enter the house if you wouldn't be home." After we hung up, we were arguing if it's for real, if my brother is not playing games with us.

Though we're not sure, we didn't have our dinner at the mall instead we just bought the groceries and headed home. When we almost reached our gate, my brother called again and he was there! Riding on the airport taxi! He's here! For real! We were really surprised, coz we only talked a day ago and he never mentioned anything about coming home.

We found out that he'll be moving to Helsinki, Finland. He'll be working in another hotel there. And he just came home because he needs to leave to Helsinki from his country of origin. We were so happy that he's here, aside from the fact that he gave me a Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel perfume as a gift and a purse from the same label! Too bad he wasn't able to hand carry my bag because it wasn't delivered yet, but sure thing it'll be here soon. :)

I am just so happy that he's here, even for a while! Thanks kuya for the surprise! Love you!

B is for Balenciaga Brief Bag

If you noticed in my previous post I didn't drool over any bag it's because I am already fantasizing over a bag from Balenciaga from their F/W2007 collection. It's the Giant brief bag. I don't care what color will I get as long as I can have that bag! I just so loveeeet! The bag is spacious (it's giant, right?) and I just love the style/design. It's not like any of the Balenciaga bags I've seen before.

I've asked my brother for it as a post birthday gift and hopefully he'll be able to buy one for me and send it as soon as he can. Not so demanding huh!

I am so jealous because he sent me pictures of him with a LV Keepall 50, a large Gucci toiletry case (A GUCCI FOR A TOILETRY CASE? £150? WHAT THE?) a pair of H&M shoes and Prada shades! I am so green-eyed now! How did he get all those stuff? He was there for less than a couple of months. Kuya do you have a fairy godmother there? Can you ask her to visit me even for a day? I am so jealous that I even asked him to send me all the paper bags that came with it!

Here's what the Balenciaga Giant brief bag looks like:

You'll find the details of the bag on the Balenciaga website. It's the 10th bag/item. Isn't it pretty?

Lucky Mom's Day!

This afternoon I, my mom, my cousin Don, and a couple of friends (distant relatives) went to the Sto, Niño chapel in Greenbelt to hear mass. When we got there the mass has already started. Plus it was raining so hard, so there's no way for us to be somewhere near the chapel without getting wet. So we just decided to loiter around the area and just visit the chapel after the mass. We went around the shops in Greenbelt 3 that we (my mom, kuya Don and I) like the most. We went to Marc Jacobs, LV, Burberry and Gucci's. Mom found a really nice bag in LV but had second thoughts in getting it 'cos she found a bag exactly like it in F when we went there a few days ago. I on the other hand gawked over a scarf in Burberry and LV. I just can't help myself, the scarves are so gorgeous. And since summer is almost over, or should I say it is over but unofficially (since it's still May). Whatevs! I feel like the scarves are perfect for the rainy season coz it's like cold, during this season, right?! Say that you agree with me, please?

Anyway, after loitering around we had dinner around the area. It was supposedly a Mother's day celebration, but my mom ended up paying for our dinner! Hahaha. It's because I forgot my wallet, and all my cash, credit cards and ATM cards are there. So there, I just told my mom to pay for our dinner and I'll just pay her back when I get home tomorrow after working tonight. We had a great time while having dinner. My cousin Don and Sheila goofed around that let everyone of us guffaw. My kuya Don and Sheila did like a role playing. Kuya Don is a first time tourist in the Philippines and Sheila is like befriending her and they were really acting it out! You should have seen them, they're really good at it and add the fact that they're super hilarious!

Almost all people who heard them at the resto laughed really hard! I was like in the middle of being ashamed at the same time enjoying what my cousins are doing.

I didn't want to be a party pooper, but I left just when the real party started because I got work at 8 o'clock and I can't afford to be absent since I already slacked off from work Saturday night.

I'm here at work but I don't feel like I'm working now. All I did so far is just surf the net, listen to music, IM and blog! There are some few work-related stuff that I did but out of the almost 5 hours that I've been here.. I worked for less than half an hour I think. Lucky me! :)

It wouldn't be long till I get off from work, but I got a teeny weeny problem. What will I put in my shift report? I can't like place surf the net, read photoshop tutorials, listen to music, IM and update my blog. Ahhh this is the price I have to pay for this! Anyway, I'm thankful for everything.

How about you how did you celebrate Mother's day?

For One More Day with Vanessa Carlton

This post is so late, but you know me 'better late than later'! Anyway, my mom and I went to meet a distant cousin at the EDSA Shangrila, after having lunch there and a little shopping we went to Trinoma to watch Vanessa Carlton's mini concert. When we got there I went straight to the concierge to claim my pass but the lady there told me that I was late! They already gave away all the pass! I almost freaked out because I've been waiting for this, there's got to be a way... Think. Think. Kristina.

We went to the 4th level and luckily I saw a cordoned area there, and it was the area of the live feed broadcast of Vanessa Carlton from cinema 7. I had no other choice, so I fell in line. And it was the closest that I could get to Vanessa Carlton. While I was watching the concert on the screen, my mom and cousin went for a little shopping again. Can you imagine I traded shopping for Vanessa?! That's how much I like her. The mini concierto was good, she sang my favorite songs and she also said some things about the songs she wrote/co-wrote. And she also said that she strongly believes that she has a little of our 'blood', as she looks like everyone here in the country. After the mini concert I met with my mom and we had dinner. We got home past midnight.

And you think I capped of the night just like that? No. I spent the whole night fixing my laptop, because when my mom was using it earlier she accidentally clicked on some fraud ad and boom! I got the malwarrior (malware)! I so hate those people sending malwares and will give you a fixed that they also made that costs a lot! I so hate them. I tried all the suggested fix I can find on the web but to no avail. The virus is so persistent and the worst thing is it used up all my free space on the hard drive. I know I had like more than 50g but it only left me with 45mb! Geez! Good thing before 6AM I was able to fix it by deleting it from the registry, and by deleting the account I created for anyone who uses my laptop.

Anyway, I finally got to read Mitch Albom's For One More Day. It took me three hours to finish the whole book. I love Mitch Albom! From Tuesdays with Morrie to 5 People You Meet in Heaven and this book For One More Day. This book is about a man who's given one more day with the person that really loved and cared for him, his mom.

I was in tears when I read the parts where Chick list the times when her mom stood up for her, and the times she didn't stand up for her. I can really relate to that. The book really made me realize some things about my relationship with my mom.

I read the book in a really perfect timing, since it's Mother's Day today.

Happy Mother's Day mom and to all the moms in the world.

Greek Nostalgia

This afternoon I got an SMS from a friend that Pinoy Meets World will feature Santorini and some of Greece's famous/gorgeous places (Crete and Athens). I don’t usually watch the show but because they’re featuring my most favorite place on the planet, I can not afford to miss it for the world. I can’t get enough of Santorini! It is a place where you can’t say that you’ve seen enough after a few visits, because you will always discover something new each time you set foot on the place.

Miriam Quiambao told the viewers the brief history and culture of the people living on the island. And how some people think that somewhere in or near the caldera was the lost city of Atlantis. Which I also happen to eventually believed, as all of the Greeks I know strongly believed and convinced me about the idea. Though I’m not in the position to say what is true and what’s not because I’m no archaeologist but the “evidences” are strong (in mine and their opinions). And just thinking about being somewhere near Atlantis is a great feeling. And you’ll be like “Man, I am floating above the lost city! Beat that man!”. Hahaha!

Anyway, they showed the viewers the abodes of the Greeks in Santorini. The white houses that I so love, and the donkeys that they use as their means of transportation. Miriam also brought the viewers to the caldera.
The view from the caldera is very breathtaking as usual. And she also visited some place around the islands capital Fira. She along with her Greek friend went to buy some ingredients for Tomatokeftedes, the tomato meatball without the meat. Opa! Opa! The tomatoes from the island is one of a kind, its because of the volcanic soil where it’s planted. I was hoping that Miriam would also visit the dock where Lena and Costas often meet. (Just want to squeeze this in, as the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 will be hitting the theaters soon)

She also visited Crete, I always love to visit the place… One day I’ll set foot on that island. The island seems great and rich with history and culture just like any other places in Greece. And lastly, Miriam took us, the viewers to Greece’s capital, Athens. I love Athens too! It’s a city that combines history and modernization. I so envy Miriam for she was able to visit Parthenon and the whole Acropolis! I am so green-eyed now! I promise I’ll get to Parthenon before it turns to dust, as its ruins now are so ‘ruined’.

I haven't saved enough, so for now I'll just satisfy my Greek craving by watching the Sisterhood movie. I just hope the movie will hit Philippine theaters soon.
Thanks Kitty for the SMS. :)

My Newest Buddy

I've been wanting to have a portable radio, not MP3 player or a FM radio but an AM radio! I've been telling you guys that I'm a huge news junkie, so I wanted to have a portable radio so that I can listen to the news anytime that I want. I could have bought one, but since last month's my birth month I asked my mom to get me one as a birthday present ( as if her flying here from Zamboanga for my birthday isn't already a present). Just yesterday we scouted the different shops in Shangrila Mall, EDSA Central and even Star Mall just to find the perfect radio. And at long last I found my newest buddy! It's a sleek and teeny weeny radio but it does a really BIG favor for me. It delivers the world to my hands (in this case, ears i think?!). And so I am really joyous! As in really! When we got home last night, I immediately used my little buddy, Forget about the laptop and TV. Scoot my reliable gadgets.. and give way to my little radio named Rady, as in Tom Brady minus the B! Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get it, I know I've earned some corny points for this, but the heck?! I am just so proud of Rady my buddy.

The radio is kind of my preparation for the big step, as in pretty BIG step that I'm planning to take.

Anyway, I watched XXX tonight with ate Pinky replacing Karen Davila. :) She's really great. Just when I thought I am ate Pinky's number 1 fan, I bumped on a Pinky Webb blog. Wow! She have now a bigger fan base! Kudos to you ate! :))

Heroes and Thieves

Since I first saw the billboard of Vanessa Carlton along C5 having mall shows at the Ayala malls, I've been listening to her songs from her latest album Heroes and Thieves (2007) every chance I had. At home, at work, while commuting to and from work and I even play it to sleep. I like her album, and I mean the entire album! I love the tracks. And it made me wished I've written some of the songs from that album. I don't know but I think Vanessa Carlton and I are the same person, OR MAYBE she's just like anyone of us who'd loved, been hurt and moved on with life. (I'll try to believe more on the latter reason) It's so hard to choose a favorite from that album because every song is different from the other (in a good way). And the rhythm? I looooveeeeet! Keyboard + string instruments = L♥O♥V♥E (for me)! You all know I'm a sucker of songs with keyboards on the background.. Boston (Augustana), Come On (Ben Jelen), Thousand Miles and the entire Heroes and Thieves album.

Thank you Vanessa for your wonderful record album! For sure, I'll be at one of your mall tours here in our country. I know you might be wondering why I'm into Vanessa Carlton, when I'm not into Pop music. It's just that she's a real artist with real talents, unlike the other so called 'artists'.

Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Happy Birthday to Me

Today is April 17, a day before the big 23rd! I'm posting this entry because I may not be able to go online for a few days. I have mix emotions for my upcoming birthday. I am happy because my mom's here, and it'll be the first time that we'll be celebrating my birthday together after 3 years and I'm also quite sad because it's also the first time in 3 years that my brother won't be here with me on my birthday. It's really weird because I have this half of me that's so happy, and other half that isn't.

Like I've said it's just a day before my birthday but I have no plans yet on how I'm going to celebrate it, but most likely I would celebrate it with my mom, my cousin Don and few close friends on the 18th. I would have a separate celebration though for my officemates and my closest buddies from work some time after my birthday.

I really don't have a wish list, because if I do make one and I won't get the things that I've wished for I'll just end up frustrated. So, I don't really wish for anything on my birthday except for good health for me, and my family. Oh, I have a little wish too... I'm wishing that my father would greet me on my birthday, an SMS would do. :)

Anyway, have a great weekend everyone! And I'll see you when I see you. Ciao. :)

The Meth Project

I tumbled upon the Meth Project website and I am giving my full support on their program. So I am posting this entry.

The Meth Project is a large-scale prevention program aimed at reducing first-time Meth use through public service messaging, public policy, and community outreach. Central to the program is a research-based marketing campaign that graphically communicates the risks of Meth use.

Here are the ads of the Meth Project that really struck me. So sad, but really TRUE.

If you want to know more about this project you can visit their site here.

Creating an Exciting Life

After a couple of weeks, I'm back to blogging! To tell you the truth, these past 2 weeks I wasn't living my life, it seemed like I was living other person's life. I was being carefree and careless at the same time. I don't know what got into me, I really don't want to dig deeper but all I know I was enjoying every second of it. It also helped me coped with the truth that my brother and I lead different lives now, on different time zones. I am happy for him though, I support his decision of leaving the country and the life that he had always known.

And being away from my mom and now my brother gave a me different perspective in life. And from now on I have a new mantra "I will. Today". I know you've heard that line from the newest Petron ad, but it really helps. Also as I was visiting hemmy.net (one of the sites that I frequently visit), I saw on one of it's daily links' entry about a blog called the positivity blog. The blog is so helpful to me, and the blog reflects my "I will. Today" mantra. And they're latest post is about 7 tips on how to create an exciting life. And I really find it helpful. The 7 tips are as follows:
  1. Whatever you believe, you are right. “He can who thinks he can, and he can’t who thinks he can’t. This is an inexorable, indisputable law.”
  2. Push your limits. “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”
  3. Don’t wait for inspiration or the right moment. “Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.”
  4. Act. “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.” “Action is the foundational key to all success.”
  5. Ask the right questions. “Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.”
  6. See the hidden beauty by not judging. “If only we could pull out our brain and use only our eyes.”
  7. It’s not too late. “Youth has no age.”
And if you want the whole write-up about these 7 tips you should visit the entry in the positivity blog.

I am almost turning a year older, so I would like to apply these to start anew and who wouldn't want to create an exciting life, raise your feet!

Big Girls Still Cry

I was channel flicking early this evening, and it seemed like the universe conspired and all the channels that I was flicking through, there were always people leaving. First stop: on ABS-CBN "Anak" was on air and it was on the scene that the mother was leaving and her family are having teary goodbyes in the airport, then on ETC, the topic on Tyra's show is about leaving the comfort of your abode and lastly.. (i forgot the channel) they were showing Raise Your Voice and it was on the scene that Hilary is remembering her late brother's advice. Sad, so sad!

I've been suppressing this feeling for quite a while now, a month ago the scenario of my brother leaving for abroad is kinda far out, but now it's just around the corner. It's really official and he's leaving really, really soon. Say tomorrow! It'll be the first time after three years of living together that we'll be far away from each other. And I think the longest time that we were apart is about a couple of weeks, that's when he went to Phuket without me in tow but now he'll be gone for a couple of years! It's just sad to think about it, I'm so used to being with him.

It's only the two of us since I started working here in Manila, he's like my father, my brother and my friend in one. He's my instant movie and dinner date. He cooks our meal, cleans our place and sometimes he even does the laundry! Hey you might think that I'll only miss him because of those reasons... Partly, yeah, but there's more to it that my brother does for me. Like listening to everything that I say: when I talk about my greatest dreams, when I rant about my work, or even my comments on the TV shows or movies that I've watched and even the most nonsense things that comes to my head. He's just always there for me, always ready to be what I want or needed him to be.

I guess I'm being too emotional, I'm blaming it to PMS or maybe not. Then, I'll just blame it to global warming, I watched it on Zoey 101 that most people blame everything to global warming. I just wish my brother will have a great time there, and not worry about me here coz I know he worries a lot about me. I'll be fine here, I'm a big girl and besides I have another guardian on reserve, my cousin, Don.

Have a safe trip kuya! And I'll miss you a lot! In fact, I'm already missing you even you haven't left yet. And although I don't seem to show it but I'll be the number one person who'll be missing you the most.

Love you kuya! :)

I Promise, I'll Be Better

I am so getting worst at this! I used to post a minimum of three entries a month but now, I am down to one post per month. And since my friends and I had a conference yesterday over YM, in the middle of our conversation I asked them for suggestions on what topic I should write about here. And this was how our conversation went:

Friend1: Tin, why don’t you write about the things you’ve been doing the past week/s.
Me: Hmmnnn…
Friend2: Yeah, and tell them that all you did was sleep, eat, work, and google.
Me: Friend2, you made it sound that my life is so boring…
Friend2: Oh c’mon, you’re life is not boring, because you don’t have a life!
Me: Aww, that hurts.
Friend1: Kinda true, you know.
Friend3: How about you write something about your work since it’s what you always do?
Me: I would love to, but would you like to read about long idle time, no more leads, checking quota restriction, IVR not connecting…
Friend1: What are you talking about?
Me: See? That’s what I mean!
Friend3: Please spare us the “technicalities”
Me: Ideas friends!
Friend1: Why don’t you write about how is it being single?
Me: Friend1, you’ve been my friend for like forever, and you all know that I’ve been single for so long. So long that I don’t even remember how is it being in a relationship.
Friend2: You are so right, Tin! You can not write about that.
Me: You’re not helping, at all… wait… why don’t I post what we just talked about here?
Friend3: And publish our names?
Friend2: You can’t do that, you can never let your readers know that you have mean friends!
Me: Can’t I?
Friends1: I don’t mind… coz I think you don’t have that many readers though. But will you at least keep us anonymous?
Me: Fine! Fine!

So there goes my conversation with my friends, though they are mean sometimes (I mean often times) I still love them. Because they always tell me things what others won’t.

P.S. I promise I would post a sensible entry one day. Just keep hoping! :p

I Wish My Real Life Was Half As Interesting as the Life I Live in My Head

I’m sorry but I still have the jumper hang over. I know what you’re thinking! Yeah, I just watched it but who cares? Better late than later, err never, right? Anyway, I kinda like being a jumper, imagine you can be at any place that you like, be it in Angola or the Andromeda galaxy, in a blink of an eye, at any time of day! That would be super!

A jumper’s life is close to perfect for me, except for the part that they always break/ruin something around their jump site. I would want to jump as smooth as I can, maybe David was just inexperienced, what do you think? If that’s so, I’ll keep on practicing to have a very smooth landing.

So, I’m making a list on what my itinerary would be if I were a jumper. Note that this list is just about my average jumper day.

I’ll probably start my day with a breakfast in Switzerland particularly in Geneva where the finest chocolates and creamiest cheese can be found. After breakfast, I’ll check out the Prado in Madrid and Louvre in Paris to immerse myself with the most famous works of art in the world and of course I’ll also visit Guggenheim in Manhattan to have a dose of the finest works of art of my generation.

By noon, I’ll be in a quaint bistro in Milan and after my lunch I’ll ride a gondola in Venice. Because I can’t get enough of Italy, I’ll visit a chapel in Florence and maybe sightsee a little in Tuscany. Or maybe do a little dipping in the isle of Capri! That would be great!

My mind is already fixed that I’m going to have dinner with a special friend while watching the sunset in my favorite place on the planet, Santorini. But before I jump to Greece I won’t let a day pass without visiting Prague and Dubrovnik. These places (Santorini, Prague and Dubrovnik) are really the closest to my human heart (even if I’m a jumper).

After dinner, I’ll jump back to North America and go clubbin’ in LA and maybe hop from LA clubs to London, to Darling Harbor in Sydney! And to cap the night I’ll be back in my own little bedroom in the province. You might be asking why would I go back to my “little bedroom” when I have the whole world as my bedroom? For the simplest and cheesiest reason… there is never a place like home.

And during the days when I feel like splurging on a shopping spree? I’ll be in these places: The most high end shops in Milan and Paris, Saks and Barneys in NYC, Melrose in LA, Harrods in London, the biggest Zara store in Spain, flea markets in Hong Kong and Singapore and of course the place where I can find the cheapest stuff: DV (for Divisoria) and Greenhills in San Juan. Beat that man!

And since I live in the tropics, I can’t last a year without dipping on the beaches. So I won’t miss to visit the finest sandbars in the world, Boracay, Amanpulo, Phuket, Bora Bora, Seychelles and the Maldives…

The sweet jumper's life! Oh snap! Things like these would never happen in real life. That's the reason they do this in movies, coz it can never happen in reality. I just wish my life is like a movie, and I were a jumper. I'm (almost) convinced that I'll never be one, but a girl like me can wish, right? Sigh.

I only wish my real life was half as interesting as the life I live in my head...

Eeny Meeny Miney Mo

I’ve been thinking of a topic to blog about (if you think that I’ve already thought of something that’s why I’m writing this entry… well, you got it wrong!). In fact, I have nothing in particular. I have some topics in mind… but I don’t think I would like to write about it. As you all know I’m not a serious blogger. Err.. Honestly, I have nothing, as in NOTHING in mind, being not-a-serious-blogger is just an excuse. I just want to write whatever that comes to my head.

Let’s see… the first thing that comes to my mind… (Wait, I can’t think the TV’s too loud let me lower the volume first). Work? Nope, I have spent most of my time on it, and if I’m going to write about it. I am pretty sure I’ll throw up. Scratch the thought Kristina! Oh my, I think it left me with nothing to talk about, as my work eats up 90% of my waking time. I just hate times like these: 1) when I want to write but I can’t think of a topic and 2) when I think of a very interesting thing to blab about but I’m just too lazy to write it down.

Anyway, I already told you a hundred times that I would really, really want to quit my job. But it’s just so hard for me to do. It’s like a bad habit that’s too hard to get rid off. I just can’t turn my back on my officemates that became my closest friends already. And my work is like my world for the past 2 years+. Work is fine and the pay is good, but I don’t want to settle for fine, I want to have adventure and everything that comes with it. I want to do something that I really want and being an IT is not what I want to do for the rest of my life, maybe not in this lifetime.

If you were in my shoes would you rather have yourself stuck on something that you don’t want because it gives you security and it pays the bills or do something that you really want even if you have to start from scratch? I am a very impulsive person, but when it comes to my job… I always chicken out! Not that I have mouths to feed, and I’m afraid I would starve them because I don’t. I’m just afraid that time would come that I’ll be knocking on my mom’s doorstep and asking her to feed me again because I fell for my dreams/adventure that became nightmares and misadventures. I just wish that I’m a child again so that I’ll have someone decide for me, and spare my self the worrying. But you know what, even as a child I always (often if not always) decide for myself. My mom always tell me that I want to do things my way. And most of the closest people I know would agree with her. I used to think I’m headstrong but now I don’t know what I am, neither what I used to be.

Sigh. Being an adult is really a tough job! I only wish making decisions is just like singing “Eeny meeny miney mo - catch a tiger by his toe. If he hollers let him go. Eeny meeny miney mo.” I fervently hope I’ll have the courage to decide what I really want to do with my life. (so help me god)

P.S. I just barfed, it's because I just talked about work. See? I told you I would throw up! Just kidding! :p

Lipstick Jungle ad Dates

It's Saint Valentine's Day, but no I won't be posting about Valentine blues, I had enough of it. Today the world is overflowing with mushiness and cheesiness combined. Wait, is there any difference between the two?

Anyway, I'm making this entry not because I have all the time in this world, but because I noticed that I haven't updated my little blog for quite a while, also I'm waiting for Lipstick Jungle to buffer. It's not that I'm a fan of the show, but because of the writers' strike there's nothing left on internet TV that I haven't watch yet aside from this show. So I thought of giving it's pilot episode a shot. I'm not going to make some sort of review for this show because I have only watched the first 3 minutes of it. Our connection is unusually slow today.

By the way, I have a post-Valentine date. It isn't a romantic date though, it's a group date and I bet my life that it is way cooler! This date is comprise of 2 guys and 4 gals, the Crazy MIS Buddies! After a few group dates, Sir Wilson, our IS supervisor before is finally joining us and we are all so excited about it.

We're going to watch a movie, have dinner and maybe at the same time watch the pyro olympics. I am super excited about our date. I always look forward to our get-together coz as always it is so much fun and very spontaneous.

Anyway, need to get back to Lipstick Jungle, and maybe get some sleep after watching it. I haven't slept since last night because of work (as always).

Happy Valentine's everyone! And happy birthday to Kris, John and Heart. (feeling close, i remembered them 'coz I'm hearing Boy and Kris on the background)

Tell Me Your Dreams

I've finished reading Sidney Sheldon's Tell Me Your Dreams yesterday. Would you believe it, it took me 4 days to finish a single book! It's a shame because I used to finish a book in just one sitting, and that's about 4-5 hours max. Tell Me Your Dreams is about a young beautiful woman who's suspected of committing a series of brutal murders. The police made an arrest that led to one of the most bizarre trials of the century. Bizarre because the suspect of the murders is not aware that she did all those brutal crimes, she was suffering from MPD or Multiple Personality Disorder. She has two alter egos in her, and the dominant one is the culprit of all the crimes where she, rather her body was involved. I wouldn't dig deep into the book because maybe some of you haven't read the book yet and would want to read it.

I've only read two of Sheldon's book and my favorite will always be If Tomorrow Comes. I just love Tracy Whitney, she is superb and ingenious! If you haven't read any of Sheldon's books, I suggest you read If Tomorrow Comes first.

On another note, when I was on my way to work last night I saw an accident. It was really heartbreaking! A car and a motorcycle collided along Ortigas Extension. I was so frightened when I saw what happened, the man/woman riding with the motorcycle driver fell off the motorcycle and almost hit his/her head on the concrete barrier. He/she wasn't able to get up, he was helped by the people near the accident scene. The car who crashed into the victims ran away. Unfortunately, nobody got the chance to get the plate number of the car who hit the motorcycle. I saw the car, it was a white corolla, I also saw the plate number but because of the accident I totally blanked out, and I can't remember the plate number of the car who just hit and ran. I feel so sorry for the victims, I wish I've put enough attention on the car's plate, I should have been able to help track the driver who got away from the accident leaving the victims crushed and wounded physically and emotionally.

Before I saw the accident, I was cheerful, my heart was filled with joy because of some reasons but after the accident I forgot all the happiness in me, I don't even remember why I was even happy on the first place. I really agree on what Maria wrote on her diary: "Life moves so fast; It rushes you from heaven to hell in a matter of seconds." --Maria, Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho. You really can't control nor predict what will happen in your life, one minute you're happy the other you're sad. One day you're living, the next you're already laying on a morgue bed... cold and lifeless... (God forbid) So, it only led me to one conclusion, dance like no one's watching, sing your heart out! We need to live each day like our last, coz we'll never know what the big guy up there has cooked up for us.

Enjoy life! Ciao.

Laundry Business and Nail Art

You all know how I loathed doing the laundry. I don't know the specific reason why I hate doing it, I just do and that's all you need to know.

Yesterday, when I was on my way home I thought of doing my laundry since the sun was brightly shining. If you don't know, the weather couldn't be gloomier since we arrived last Wednesday and yesterday was the first day the sun shone brightly on the east side of Manila. So, when I got home I made my thought a reality, I did my laundry. But while doing my laundry I realized something. I realized that people are like soiled or dirty clothes that needs to be cleaned. And if we just do our laundry often or as soon as our clothes get toiled and dirty we wouldn't take much time scrubbing it clean. Just like us humans, if we do mistakes we need to correct it right away, because if not we may have a hard time scrubbing off the dirt on us. Like the stained clothes, if we don't wash it right away, the stain hardens on the fabric and it would take too much time scrubbing the stain away, and sometimes if it can't be helped the stain lasts forever and our clothes will never be the same again. It may look squeaky clean in other parts but the stain will always be there, and it will always be the center of attention, no matter how hard you did for the scrubbing.

With that realization, that changed my view of doing the laundry. It made me feel good doing the chore. Thinking that I'll be able to make my clothes clean again and making it as good as new, if not just as close. And doing it makes me feel happy because I did it on my own and no one helped me. It felt like an achievement, taking it from me who hates doing it.

On the other hand, I barely made a couple of hours sleep yesterday because my aunt and cousins visited our place. Also I started reading Sidney Sheldon's book, Tell Me Your Dreams the book is very enticing and I had a hard time taking it off my hands without finishing it. If not for the Benadryl last night I won't be able to get some sleep. So thank you for whoever it is that made Benadryl, you're an angel and I love you! :)

Before I forgot, I also did some nail art yesterday with my own nails. Of course Kristina where will you put your nail art? On your cheeks? Oh come on... Anyway here are the pics my brother took of my nails. :)

Aerial View

I've been riding the plane for quite a long time but I never took a picture of the view outside the window, I didn't think of it until my latest flight. I took some pictures of Manila (aerial view) and some of the clouds, rainclouds to be exact. These photos are taken with my humble camera phone so expect that it wouldn't be that much.

New Year, New Rumors

It's only 17 days after the year 2008 started but so many things happened to me, to us! I won't say that this year will be a tough year, but a really challenging one! But I am hopeful that I'll make it through. "I can make it!" that would be my mantra for the year 2008.

Actually 2008 started great for me. I was able to spend New Year's with my family and all my 4 cousins (excluding me and my brother of course) at my hometown, and was able to meet some of my high school friends. I was also able to go swimming with my family and friends. I really had a great time, not after the day we left for Manila. There was this situation that kinda went out of hand because of those stupid rumors and rumormongers! I never thought that the people of our little town are that shallow! As in super! They put meaning to everything that you do and even the things that you weren't able to do! I love my town, believe me I really do but I just hate those rumormongers. I don't live in the Upper East side, but we have not just one but a handful of gossip girls/guys in our town. That's the price of living in a small town. I can think of a slogan for my town now... "Margos... a small town with big drama!". Oh my god, these are the side effects of watching too much TV!

Anyway, I'll tell you something later... when I have time. And I would ask for your opinion.. Ciao.

Blogging from Home

Hey everyone! I'm blogging straight from my beloved hometown! It just feels so great to be home again for new year's. We had a great dinner last night, with my grandparents, my mom and all of my cousins. We had lots of fun, as usual there's never a down time with them. I'm yet to meet my childhood friends, I've only met one of them last night. I know for sure that this break would do me great.

Hope you'll have a great start this coming 2008 friends!

Happy New Year to everyone! Ciao. :)

Happy Holidays!

Happy Christmas everyone! I know I'm late in greeting you, but as I always say 'better late than later'. I've spent Christmas at my aunt's house in Antipolo with some friends from our province. If you'll ask what happened to spending Christmas at my dad's... well, we didn't. We only went there on the 23rd to celebrate my brother's birthday and after dinner we went to DV to accompany ate Jet to buy presents for the families in the GK village in Nueva Ecija. We went home at around 3AM. Prior to that day we also went to the mall and joined the whole country on the Christmas rush and we went home at past midnight also. I promised myself that next year I'll try to have an early Christmas shopping, because it's really hard when you have it on the last minute. There are thousands of people in the mall! And everyone's going crazy! I don't want to experience the rush, never again!

Our Christmas celebration is fun filled, but it's still not the same as last year's when we spent it with mom. But it's ok because we'll be leaving tomorrow for the province to spend New year's there. Yippee! I'm so excited to see my family and friends again!

Happy Holidays everyone!

Holidays are Almost Here

It's almost Christmas! Are you done with your Christmas shopping? If you'll ask me, well... uhm.. all I've done so far is my list. Yes! You read it right, just my list. I haven't done any real shopping yet, I'll start shopping later after my shift. I know I'm so late, but it's better late than later, right? Hahahaha. I hate myself for procrastinating sometimes, err often times.

Anyway, let's forget (let me forget) about shopping for a while. There are just some things that I want to share with you, whoever you are reading this piece of wasteblog here. Wasteblog? Anyway, I know I've posted here that I'm spending the holidays at home (my dear hometown), but not anymore... not 'not' that I won't be spending any holidays there just a 'holiday'. Unluckily for us, we weren't able to book a flight before Christmas, but we were able to score a flight on the 28th so no merry Christmas in my dear hometown for me, just a happy new year's. My brother and I will either be spending Christmas' at my aunt's house in Antipolo, same as last year's or at our dad's place in Fairview. But we're not really sure yet. Aunt's place = 70%, Dad's place = 30%. :)

And, also I want to ask some gift suggestions for my brother, he'll be celebrating his birthday on the 23rd, so I want to give him something special since it's Christmas as well. Any suggestions anyone? Until now, I haven't thought of anything to give him. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, my college classmate Joannie will be coming over to spend new year's here in the Philippines with me. I am so excited to see her again, it's been over 4 years since the last time we saw each other face to face (webcam sessions not included). She'll be here for a month. We would have enough time to catch up with each other's lives and I will also have enough time to bring her to almost all the best places in the country. I am super excited! I know I'll have as much fun as I had last new year's.

OK, I need to get back to my shopping list now to finalize everything. I can't afford to lose more minutes, I've wasted so much time already. Till my next blogging session. Ciao.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

I've watched the live telecast of the Amazing Race last Monday, and they were in Croatia. I don't know but I have this penchant for old cities and I fell in love with the city of Dubrovnik right there and then.

I love the city's architecture, it's like Santorini but different. They have the same oldish look but most of Santorini's architecture is in white but in Dubrovnik it's off-white and the roofs of their houses are in red brick tiles. The city seems so medieval for me.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

"The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO." -- Yahoo! Travel

Dubrovnik will be one of my future destinations. Hopefully I can get to visit the city next year. I really need to save up for my travel sprees, if not there'll be a bigger chance that I'll pass on school again so I could fund my travel. And I really need to cut on my shopping too!

If I'll get to visit Dubrovnik, I won't miss Zagreb for the world. I heard it's a city rich of history and culture. I just love immersing myself in different places and cultures. Trust me, it's a different yet fulfilling experience.

Ciao.

Timing is Everything

Have you had the chance and you missed it? I did, I just did. And the feeling really sucks!

I've been told by my brother and some friends to do this
'thing', coz it is what I really like doing and they think I'm suited for it but I don't always fall for their persuasions. The other night, I finally put my guards off and allowed myself to be persuaded, I was finally doing the 'thing'. I planned everything the night before. My brother and his friend offered to accompany me. And I even ditched my last hour at work yesterday just to be there. I didn't get to eat breakfast and lunch just to finish all tasks that needs to be done at work and just to be there on time. Unfortunately, when I got there for some reasons my brother didn't get to know the right venue, I don't know if he really exerted an effort to find it or what. When I got there they were only having lunch and that 'thing' was only until 3pm and I got there around quarter to 3. So it was really over for me.

I really cried, I was so upset (I still am) its because they forced me to do it but they didn't help me out. I was upset not because I didn't get to do that
'thing', but because I exerted time and effort just to be there and also I ditched work, and all for nothing. I know I shouldn't be upset, I'm part to be blame because I didn't go there earlier but that's part of our plan, they should go there first to have me listed for I have work, but they didn't.

I just want to think that maybe that
'thing' isn't for me, or maybe the time's not right yet. I just wish I'll still have the chance and not miss it again.

Enchanted

I went to watch Enchanted at the movies last Saturday. It was a nice film. Their idea of mixing animation and 3D is so brilliant! Amy Adams owned the character Giselle in the film, she was really great at playing that character and she have that "fairytale princess" voice. And there's James Marsden (aka Cyclops)... the guy who've never ended up with the girl he wanted in every movie that he starred. And of course there's His Royal Hotness McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey), who played as a lawyer/single father and modern day prince charming to Giselle. I enjoyed watching the movie because I love all Disney fairytales and this movie is like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Little Mermaid and Beauty in the Beast in one. If the movie's a song it'll be like a Disney medley.

I'll leave you with Enchanted's movie trailer and some tracks from the soundtrack album.

First Day of the Last Month

It's the first day of the last month of the year! And that means 24 days before Christmas, and 23 days before we go home for the holidays! Yippeee! I am so happy, it's been three years since the last time I've spent Christmas with my grandparents in the province. I am super excited!

I started planning on my shopping list, but until now I haven't finalize my list yet. There are just names that keeps on popping in my head... family, friends, co-workers, friends' babies, family friends and all sorts of friends! Gosh! I can see that I'll be penniless by the time Christmas comes. But I don't really care, I know it'll be worth every penny. The smiles on their faces when they will receive my presents will be priceless. That's for sure.

I am so excited to spend the holidays back in the province, not only that I'll get to spend it with my family but also with some friends way back in grade school. I haven't seen some of them for years. And I also want to see the babies of my buddies in high school, as you know some of them (most I think) are already married. There are only few of us left that are not yet married. And I want to keep it that way for the next three years, at least.

Anyway, it's my last day at work (for the week), and I'm going to have some fun tonight! :) Happy weekend everyone!
